British Values

Promoting British Values at West Park Academy

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

At West Park Academy these values are reinforced regularly in the following ways:

Democracy:

Democracy is actively promoted within the school through the work of the school council. Year 6 children invite our local MP into school to discuss her work and this gives them an opportunity to ask questions about how democracy works in our country. They also have the opportunity of visiting the Houses of Parliament as part of their educational visit to London in the summer term.

The Rule of Law:

The importance of laws through our Behaviour Policy is constantly reinforced throughout the school day. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws: that they govern and protect us; the responsibilities that this involves; and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from the Police; Fire Service; etc. help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty:

As a school we educate and provide boundaries for children. Pupils are actively encouraged to make reasoned choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms, for example through our E-Safety and PSHCE lessons.

Mutual Respect:

Part of our school ethos and behaviour policy has revolved around Core Values such as ‘Respect’, and pupils have been part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs:

This is achieved through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Assemblies and lessons on citizenship are regularly held to promote tolerance of different cultures, faiths and beliefs. In 2013 we achieved the ACT Award which demonstrates our commitment to the promotion of citizenship.
